Richard had a passion for football from an early age, and has continued his commitment to the sport as a Goalkeeper for the past 40 years.  He played Central Football for Woodleigh Football Club and represented Taranaki at the U23 level. The opportunity came for him to return to his birth place Barbados in the Caribbean, where he continued to play football in the Division 1 League and then with age set in, he went on to play Masters for Carlton FC.

He worked in Barbados with the Kickstart Footballl Academy whose focus was grassroots football.  Richard was a volunteer coach assisting with the U13 team and goalkeeping development. He had the opportunity to work with Russell Hopper –Goalkeeping Level 3 Coach from the UK. Russell worked for the Brewster Trust which partnered with Arsenal FC and the Gap Year Programme to run camps and training to develop football in Barbados.

On returning to New Zealand Richard joined Moturoa AFC and became actively involved in the Club both as a player and a committee member. He took on the role of Junior Coordinator and U15 Coach and played Division 1 for the club. At the junior level, there was not a lot of coaching availabe for goalkeepers, which opened the door for him to offer his assistance and experience to the goalkeepers in the club.

Richard offered his services to Central Football to assist with the Youth Talent program for Taranaki. This has now expanded into a key role facilitates goalkeeping selection and training for the Taranaki Talent Group for U10 to U16 Level. He has continued his support of football in his region working with Central Football to administer training at their camps for their Stage 2 National Program coaching goalkeepers in both the rep and federation programs.

When Richard was 15 he had an incredible opportunity to get a few goalkeeper coaching sessions with Fritz Van Hattum (whose son Frank represented New Zealand as the goalkeeper at the 1982 World Cup). This gave him a good grounding to reach higher levels. With more coaching, he looks back and wonders what levels he could have achieved given the technical coaching support. Because of his love for goalkeeping Richard is commited to developing the much-needed support to this very niche area of coaching. His vision is to see goalkeeping coaching offered at a high level both at a grassroots and senior level in his region and throughout New Zealand.
